Best Binoculars Under 100 2021 Reviews

So, on to the big question...

Is it possible to get good quality binoculars for under 100 dollars?

The answer is a BIG yes. It’s not only kid’s binoculars that are budget-friendly; adults can also enjoy these low prices. But you may have to lower your expectations a bit.

For starters, such a reasonably-priced binocular will neither come with an expensive coating on its lens nor have a 30x ultra magnification. But you can get decent technical specs such as an environment-proof design, a reasonable field of view, and a standard knob for controlling the view.

Another way to get lower prices on great quality binoculars is to shop last year's models.

By not always getting the most recent version, you can often get advanced features at a lower price. For this reason, we have included several older models — but don't worry, we also included links to other models from these great binocular brands.

Another great option is to check out the Factory Outlet Store.

When we did our research, they had over 300 binoculars in stock from brands like Steiner Optics, Bushnell, Celestron, and many more. And for most products, shipping on all orders within the continental United States is free!

Okay, let's get on to our reviews, so you can learn more about these great budget friendly binoculars!

DISCLAIMER: All binoculars were priced at less than $100 at the time we did our research. While we do check regularly to confirm products are still in this range, price changes are at the discretion of the manufacturer. If you a discover a significant price increase, please let us know.

Bushnell Falcon Wide Angle Full Size Binocular Review

Bushnell Falcon 10x50 Wide Angle Binoculars (Black)

Manufacturer's Specifications

Magnification: 10X
Objective Lens Diameter: 50mm
Field of View: 300 feet / 1000 yards
Prism: Auto Focusing Porro Prism
Close Focus: 25 feet

Eye Relief: 9mm
Exit Pupil: 5mm
Coated Optics: Yes
Weight: 27 ounces
Size: 9.3 x 8.2 x 4.2 inches

The powerful magnification found in the Bushnell Falcon 10x50 is something you would not expect to get in binoculars of its price range — just under $40 when we last checked.

This device gives you a 10x magnification and a 50mm objective lens. Together with the autofocussing Porro prism found inside, you get large and clear images that are 10x larger than normal.

With its larger objective lens, you are sure of getting a better experience with a huge field of view of 300 ft at 1000 yds, and brighter images. You will be able to see the bird in excellent clarity and even follow it as it moves and jumps from one branch to the next.

This pair of binoculars has an eye relief of 9mm. While this might not be huge, it is still acceptable and can work for most prescription eyewear.

They are perfect for wildlife observation, birding, hunting, stadium sports, and many other outdoor activities.

The rubber fold-down eyecups are designed for your comfort and also to bar extraneous light. Eye glass wearers simply need to roll down the eyecups to bring the eyes near the binoculars lens, which in turn improves the field of view. This is also great for sunny days when wearing sunglasses.

Best Binoculars Under $100 — 2021 Buying Guide

buying binoculars on a budget what to look for

This guide is designed to give you an understanding of what to look for when buying binoculars on a budget. We won't get too technical, and will be just covering the basics but it should be enough to get you started.

Binoculars are a set of symmetrical telescopes that allow you to view a subject that is far away, using both eyes. By simply looking through its two eyepieces, you are able to see the bird up close or the far-off dear without having to get near them.

To allow you to view distant objects symmetrically, these devices require two distinct telescopes, one for each of your eyes, held together in a gadget called binoculars, thus allowing binocular vision. These telescopes are arranged symmetrically, one on each side and aligned to accurately face in the same direction. This way, the user gets undistorted vision of faraway objects. Unlike monocular, which only use one telescope to observe objects, binoculars offer the user three-dimensional viewing, while promoting visual accuracy and clarity.

Binoculars vary in size; ranging from standard handheld commercial binoculars that are easy to store to enormous pedestal mounted military ones. The size of the binocular is what determines its range.

The bigger the size, the bigger the lenses; which translates to higher quality distant viewing.

You can control how much closer an object will look through your binocular by checking its magnification or power range. This is the number that appears right before the “x.” 10x50 binoculars, for instance, will have a 10x magnification, while an 8x25 binocular will have 8x magnification.

Before we get to the features and characteristics to look for when shopping for new binoculars, let's quickly talk about the different uses — because how you will be using them, does impact what you need.

Uses of Binoculars

When choosing binoculars, consider weight and size — especially if you'll be carrying them in a backpack.

Binoculars are a "must have" for many outdoor enthusiasts — bird watchers would definitely miss out on a lot without them!

These gadgets are also good for sports viewing by spectators who may find themselves seated at the far back. They can use binoculars to get closer and clearer views of the activity.

People who love different outdoor adventures such as backpacking and traveling, hiking, sightseeing, and camping can use these devices for many applications.

For instance, hunters can use advanced rangefinder binoculars to get excellent distant viewing and range-finding. When camping, you can’t risk going near a growling, ferocious creature or scare away a more timid one you want to get a closer look at. A good pair of binoculars will let you watch the animal move while taking safe shelter within the camp.

Many tourist destinations across the globe also stock swivel-mounted binoculars to help tourists get better views of faraway objects. Such binoculars are usually quite expensive and larger to be placed at the locations. As such, they are sturdily attached and require you to insert a coin before using them.

In professional applications, military personnel use binoculars in their day-to-day operations. Using these devices, military are able to spot enemies from afar and take the needful action. They can also use binoculars to safeguard their land and prevent intruders from coming in. For these type of applications, you would need a more expensive set of binoculars or goggles, probably with night vision capability.

Still on professional applications, these devices can be used for surveillance by people in the defense forces or related areas. Marine and private surveillance professionals can also make use of these gadgets. These professionals use these units to keep tabs on suspicious objects/ agents that might intrude and cause destruction to the guarded property/individuals.

Binoculars can also be used in the entertainment world; so don’t limit yourself only to outdoor activities. Whether it’s in theater/opera performance, or festivals and social events, or concerts, grab a good pair of binoculars and peep through the eyecups.

You no longer have to miss the sight of your favorite star performing, or the colorful procession on the parade. No matter the size of the crowd, you can count on your binoculars to catch a glimpse of everything that’s happening.

Binoculars Types — Overview

Binoculars come in various sizes and specifications to cater to the needs of the users.

Full Sized Binoculars

A full-size pair would use lenses that are 40mm or larger. Such binoculars have the ability to take in more light and perform well in dim light environments as compared to their smaller variations.

The ability to capture more light is what makes these binoculars to provide unshakeable images and larger field of view. However, the larger size of these devices renders them inappropriate for backpacking, though they can be used on boats or for wildlife viewing.

Mid-Sized Binoculars

A mid-size binocular is the smaller version of these binoculars and comes with 30-39mm objective lenses. They are the ideal size for sports and wildlife viewing, though they are still slightly heavy for backpacking. A moderately-sized pair of binoculars offers above-average light transmission and excellent viewing quality.

Compact Binoculars

Compact binoculars are the smallest variations with objective lenses that are below 30mm. These are the most ideal binoculars that you can carry along while backpacking. They work effectively during daytime outdoor adventures.

These are the main types of binoculars found on the market today.

With continuous technological improvement, manufacturers continue to create better quality binoculars that meet the needs of the growing consumer base.

How to Choose the Best Binoculars

Whether you want to buy the best binoculars for wildlife or nature spotting, or for bird watching, there are two important factors that will quickly help narrow down your search: budget and use.

But, how do you know which binocular is good for you?

Here are some pointers for what to look for in budget-friendly binoculars.

Magnification

Well, these gadgets are classified according to two major things: their magnification and the lens size. For instance, a model with a magnification of between 8x and 10x is ideal for someone looking for general-purpose binoculars for hand-held use.

Note that for some applications, you may be forced to go for bigger magnification; though the ideal magnification should be between 6x - 10x.

Objective Lens Size

The second digits on a binocular represent the objective lens diameter in mm. For instance, an 8x50 binocular has 50mm front lens diameter.

Bigger is better when it comes to lens size as bigger lenses tend to let in more light. But, remember portability is also an important factor. Lightweight and compact binoculars usually come with smaller lenses, so there is a trade off here.

However, if you will be using your binoculars mostly during the day, then a bigger lens isn’t really a big deal.

Materials

Another quality to look out for when buying binoculars is the material they are made from. It should not just be robust, but should also offer long eye breather for that extra comfort. We’d also suggest you check on the waterproof or anti-fogging capabilities, which are useful for astronomy, birding, marine, boating, and other uses.

The coating on the binocular also determines its brightness and the ability to gather light. Most compact binoculars discussed here are multi-coated.

Usage

As mentioned above, it is important to consider what you are going to use your binoculars for, before getting one. A birdwatcher, for instance, may not go for binoculars meant for astronomy and vice-versa.

Different kinds of binoculars serve different purposes, so buy one according to its application.

Portability

When it comes to binoculars physical size is not always the best indicator of quality. Bigger doesn’t guarantee optimum performance. Most good quality modern binoculars are compact; besides a binocular should be lightweight and easy to carry.

Don't get us wrong, there are times when all the bells and whistles that come with larger, full size binoculars are needed. Just don't shop with the mentality that in order for them to be good, they have to be big. If that were true, we would still be carrying around the monstrosity of a cell from the 80's. Not very portable, were they?

Eyecups

Binoculars with an eyecup are highly recommended as they provide a comfortable view. Also, these types of binoculars can be used by both glass and non-glass wearers since the eyecups can be adjusted accordingly.

Prism Type - Porro Prism vs Roof Prism

Even though the prisms are on the inside of the binoculars, you can quickly tell from the outside what kind it is.

Roof prism binoculars have barrels that are pretty much the same width, from end to end. Remember when you were a kid and taped two cardboard toilet paper rolls together to make a pretend pair? In contrast, Porro prism binoculars are narrower at the eye end, and wider at the opposite end where the objective lens is — kind of like a cone.

Because of how the prisms work, Roof prism binoculars can be made more compact and lightweight and are easier for the designers to make waterproof. There is a downside though. The light in a Roof system goes through six reflections (compared to only four with a Porro system) which means there is a fraction of light loss with each bounce.

In general, it is less expensive for designers to produce Porro binoculars with great light and clarity, which is why most lower end binoculars have Porro prism systems.

However, because of the popularity of Roof prism systems, a lot of research and development has been done, and you can find decent quality Roof binoculars for under $100.

So, those are the most important things to look out for when buying binoculars.

Of course, the more features, the superior the quality and the optics, which also means you are likely to pay more.

Characteristics of Inexpensive Binoculars

Basically, you will not get a lifetime buy with this budget, but you will surely get something that is suitable for you.

This is the best place for people looking for temporary hunting binoculars under a 100 dollars. And, for the hunters who are new to the game, this is the best entry level bracket to get your very first pair.

Here are some of the qualities that come with binoculars in this price range.

What to Expect with Cheap Binoculars

Magnification

The magnification of a binocular is what makes it be either low-cost or high-cost. The first digits on the binocular indicate magnification and they always point to the magnifying power. The ideal magnification is usually between 6x and 10x

Clarity

When using a binocular, we may say that clarity really depends on the user. The clarity, in this case, refers to the clear vision of subjects, in bright light and dim light, both at daylight and dusk. It also refers to the color correctness of the object.

Binoculars with a large exit pupil diameter are the most likely to pass this analysis. Exit pupil refers to the optical length of the binoculars divided by its magnification.

Prism Glass Type - Bak4 vs BK7

There are two types of prism glass designs for binoculars: Bak4 prism and Bak7 prism. Since Bak4 has a higher refractive index than BK7 glass, this is what you should be looking for.

Remember, in terms of quality, there is a difference between "inexpensive" and "cheap". Lower quality binoculars tend to have Bak7 glass and this is not a place where you want to cut costs.

Fog Proof/Waterproof

There are a great deal of binoculars under $100 come with fog proof and waterproof capabilities. A model that doesn’t have one or both of the features is not really worth your money.

Type of Coating

The anti-reflective coatings found on binoculars can be one of this:- fully multi-coated, multi-coated, or just coated. A good quality model in this price range should at least be multi-coated.

Prism Type

As discussed earlier, generally speaking Porro binoculars will be less expensive in comparison to the clarity they provide. But there are quite a few good quality Roof prsim binoculars that are affordable. Roof style binoculars also tend to habe better magnification capabilities and are more compact.
