  • Best Skateboards for Beginners & Pros 2021 Reviews โ€” How to Pick the Right Skateboard

Whether you're a new skater or have been shredding for years, finding a good quality skateboard on a budget isn't always easy.  Just because you don't want to spend a lot of money, doesn't mean you want a "cheap" board that won't handle your tricks!

We've done the research have found a great mix of skateboards for both beginners and pros that won't break the bank. Plus we put together a guide that will help you find the right board for you. Or, if you're looking to build one of your own, it will help you get the right parts!

โ€œOver the years, Iโ€™ve heard a lot of people say โ€˜thereโ€™s something missing in my lifeโ€™. None of these people have been skateboarders.โ€

- Lucas Klein -

Skateboards have come a long way from the early โ€™50s, where people discovered these exquisite pieces of man-made equipment that would forever change manโ€™s locomotion. The idea that you can glide through the air is pretty exciting.

Plus it sure beats walking, right?

Well, fast forward to recent times. Skateboards are now among the best way to have fun when the waves on the beach are down, and you get to do this all while simultaneously improving your motor skills.

Unlike the past, where everyone would make their own horrid depiction by assembling basic wood and a pair of wheels, manufacturers nowadays are especially keen on the assembly process.

Modern skateboards are tweaked to be as efficient as possible for both beginners and pro skaters (and everything in between).

They are now faster, more comfortable and with features like rails and wheel bearings that make it possible to do all those ill-advised tricks you see kids doing on the internet. We even have electric skateboards now, which are more powerful and donโ€™t require too much effort to operate.

That said, choosing one among the vast array of skateboard out there may be really daunting, especially if you are new to this. The more experienced riders may also be looking for upgrades for their less-competitive starter pack boards.

Pro Skateboards for Everyday Skaters

It is important to keep in mind that when we refer to pro skaters in this article we are not talking about people who get paid to skateboard. You know, the Tony Hawk's, Tony Alava's, Lacey Baker's, Bam Margera's, Nyjah Huston's, Lizzie Armanto's, Paul Rodriguez's and Ryan Sheckler's of the shredding world.

And when we say amateur skater, we are not talking about skaters who have advanced their skills enough to be able to enter the competition circuit. On their way to hopefully becoming a true professional skater.

Although this may be every shredders dream โ€” to get sponsored by one of the top brands and make a living doing what you love to do โ€” for us we are talking about regular, everyday skaters.

People like you!

If you are just starting out, you are a true amateur. A beginner. The more you practice, the better you will get and more advanced your tricks will become. At this point, you are starting to skate like a pro and will need a better board.

Who knows? Maybe with one of these boards you'll be on your way to go Pro!

For this reason, we have done our research and assembled some of the best skateboards out there for both beginners and pros!

On top of that, we put together a comprehensive guide that walks (or should we say skates?) you though what you need to know in order to choose the right skateboard for your age, skating style and experience level.

Whether you are a first time skater, or have been at it for years, there's something for you in this article!

By the way, if you are new to skating, we strongly encourage you to read our other post โ€” 9 Skateboarding Tips for Beginners โ€” which provides useful information about how to ride a skateboard safely, as well as several other informative tips.

Best Skateboards 2021 Reviews

If you are new to skateboarding, it's highly recommended that you get a board that's ready to go, rather than building one from scratch (unless you have someone who can help you get all the right stuff).

These are usually referred to as complete skateboards or skateboard completes.

A complete skateboard includes a skateboard deck, grip tape, wheels, bearings, trucks, and the necessary hardware to attach the trucks to the board.  Some brands offer pre-assembled complete boards and others you have to build yourself.

In the latter case the set comes with pre-determined pieces, rather than you having to go out and select each component individually. For experienced skateboarders, complete boards provide convenience for skaters who don't want to build a board.

For our product reviews, we chose to focus only on complete skateboards that fall in the moderate to budget friendly price range with an average price of about $50 (with the exception of the high-end electric skateboard).

Have a Bit More to Spend on a Skateboard?

If you do have a bigger budget, we recommend checking out boards from Element SkateboardsZero SkateboardsSanta Cruz SkateboardsAlmost Skateboards or Creature Skateboards.  They'll cost more, but you can't go wrong with boards from these brands with reputations for quality.

Since this article doesn't review those boards, if you are new to skating, you may want to read our guide first to help you choose the right one for your experience level and style of skating.

If you don't want a pre-assembled complete skateboard and are considering building your own board from scratch (especially if it's your first time), you will find the information in our skateboard guide extremely useful to make sure you get the right components.

So skip ahead if that's you!

Best Beginner Skateboards 2021 - Top 5 Skateboards for Beginners

We are going to start with beginner skateboards that will help you learn and advance to skating with the big boys (and girls)!  Even if you have been skating for a while and are looking for a new board, you may still want to read through these reviews.

Many of the beginner boards the have chosen are also good for more advanced skaters and/or the brands also make pro skateboards.

Powell Golden Dragon Complete Skateboard Review

Powell Golden Dragon Flying Dragon Complete Skateboard

If you are looking for that perfect skateboard to jump start your skating journey, this beautiful piece from Powell was made for you. This particular brand from the skateboard manufacturing giant has been making rounds since 1978. And whatโ€™s that to say if not sure experience and fine craftsmanship?

The Golden Dragon line from Powell offers a variety of graphic designs โ€” the one we have pictured above is the Flying Dragon in red.

Starting with its impeccable design, the fiery graphics on the Powell Golden Dragon will have you feeling like you are standing on the wings of a little baby dragon as you skate through. It has a firm, nice wide top board, measuring 7.625 wide and 31.625 inches long, and a grip that guarantees your balance as you practice all those beginner moves or while learning new tricks.

The wheels of this unit are also of great quality. They are made using high rebound polyurethane wheels, which give great roll and grip. For beginners, this would serve especially well when learning to turn.

The board itself is manufactured through the AirLam process. Here, the material is pressed together under intense pressure, ultimately resulting in a very compact, very durable board.

For more advanced skaters (or newbies with a bigger budget), you may want to check out the Powell-Peralta line of skateboards.

The deck of the Golden Dragon is one of the toughest out there โ€” able to withstand up to 200 pounds!

Our Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Pros

  • The wheelโ€™s durometer is hard; great for doing tricks
  • The wheels are decently wide for balance (54 mm)
  • The deck is nicely stiff which is good for durability
  • The board has a nice grip to try tricks
  • Good aesthetic design for the price

Cons

  • Not best for cruising: wheels are small
  • The deck starts feeling soft when used at its maximum weight limit
  • The brushings on the trucks can seem soft
  • A wrench is required when adjusting trucks

Enjoi Skateboards Whitey Panda Complete Skateboard Review

Enjoi Whitey Panda Logo Wide R7 Skateboard Deck - Whitey - 8.375"

This next unit is a favorite for enjoyment and panda lovers everywhere. Other than its cute design print, the Enjoi Whitey Panda has all the features that youโ€™d want in a good skateboard.

First, it features resin 7 construction on its boards, which is ideally 100% Canadian maple veneer together with special epoxy resin glue. Just by the sound of it, you can tell you are getting into a good deal. The boards are all pressed individually, guaranteeing that precise concave on each deck for more consistent performance.

Thatโ€™s just the beginning.

The trucks on this baby are made from heavy-duty aluminum, which guarantees its overall integrity. Despite this, the skateboard is surprisingly very lightweight in nature. Also in place are grade 8 steel kingpins, axles and USA made pivot cups and bushings.

The skateboard comes with 52mm wheels, which are good for both park and street skating. It is 8 inches long, 31 inches wide, which is good for stability, with state of the art amphetamine bearings in place. The bearings themselves feature light synthetic oils, serviceable rubber shields and delin crown that simply makes it one of the best-rated bearings out there.

The unit comes unassembled, therefore you might need to research your way around this if you are a complete newbie.  However, if you would rather have fewer set up options, you can get the Whitey Panda pre-assembled (in your choice of 4 designs).

By the way, if you have a little girl, she might love Enjoi's My First Pony 7.25 Push Skateboard which looks REALLY reminiscent of My Little Pony (and of course it has the Enjoi panda on it as well)!

For those who enjoy the process of assembly, you get the liberty to customize the Whitey Panda to your own liking.

Our Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Pros

  • Quality; durable construction on deck
  • Wheels are nicely grippy, good for the smoother surfaces.
  • Consistent curvature
  • Features 100% Canadian maple veneer
  • Core trucks feature heavy duty aluminum, which makes it lightweight

Cons

  • Comes un-assembled (which may be a pro, depending upon your preferences)
  • The trucks could use upgrades
  • Some users claim that the bushings are weak

SkateXS Personalized Street Kids Complete Skateboard Review

SkateXS Personalized Beginner Starboard Street Skateboard

It may be hard to find a board that is actually kid friendly, which is why SkateXS went the extra mile and had this particular skateboard made just for kids.  Perhaps what stands out about this model right here is how customizable it is.

Besides coming in multiple colors choices for the Jessup Grip Tape and wheels, the SkateXS gives you the extra option of having your young oneโ€™s name input before delivery. This is enough to get any new kid skater excited.

And when it comes to graphics, you child can choose from the panda, pirate, unicorn or starboard design โ€” all of which feature eye-catching colors!

Designed by skateboarding parents, kids boards from Skatexs come in three sizes broken down by age group: 5 to 7, 8-10 and 11-12 years old.

Let's take a closer look at the smallest size, which is literally made for child beginners.

You can see this in its size โ€” 7.0 x 28 inches โ€” which is specifically made to allow for more balance for kids and young learners. And more so, its bamboo deck, which is great because it is lightweight and durable while environmentally friendly and stable at the same time. This makes it great for both the skater and the planet alike.

The board features 90A 53 mm wheels, which are relatively larger than the previous ones on the list. With larger sized wheels, your youngins can get more versatility, such that they can ride it both in park and streets without many barriers.

It also has pre-lubricated bearings with ABEC-7 bearings. Anyone will tell you those standard bearings are enough to exceed most basic boards out there.

To make your cleaning experience easy, you get removable shields with this beast.

Our Rating: 5 out of 5

Pros

  • The ecofriendly bamboo board is really good quality and strong
  • Made specifically to suit kids with safer, age appropriate sizing
  • Variety of customization options in terms of graphics, wheels and grip tape colors
  • Option to personalize with skaterโ€™s name

Cons

  • Relatively pricey but that is because of the higher quality components compared to most โ€œkids boardsโ€
  • Canโ€™t support adult weights but it's made for kids

Krown Rookie Complete Skateboard Review

krown rookie checker skateboard review

If money is tight, you might not get a better deal for a beginner level skateboard than the Krown Rookie Checker Skateboard.  Despite its wallet-friendly price, this board is still able to compete with the more high-end models.

Starting with its 7-ply maple deck, whose design incorporates a modern concave shape. You can rest assured that you will maintain your stability as you practice your balance.

The board measures 7.75โ€™โ€™ by 32 โ€˜โ€™, meaning itโ€™s large enough to support any new learner. It has 5.0 aluminum gloss trucks, with 52 mm wheels. This is a fairly decent standard by any measure. With slightly low ABEC bearings of 5, the board ranks average, which is still acceptable considering its price range.

The Krown Rookie Checker Skateboard also has black grip tape and 1โ€™โ€™ hardware for extra stability as you practice flipping tricks. Overall, judging by the minimalistic features in place, this board would be highly recommended for new clumsy leaners of the art. It is rigid enough to endure falls, yet cheap enough to be replaced.

Reminiscent of old skool Vans skate shoes, you can get this checkerboard pattern skateboard in your choice of black and green, black and blue, black and pink, black and red, or classic black and white.

We've featured the checker design, but the Krown Rookie series boards come in other stylish graphics!  More experienced skaters may want to check out the Krown KPC Pro series (reviewed below) of top-of-the line, high performance boards which also come with a budget-friendly price.

KPC Pro Complete Skateboard Review

KPC Pro Skateboard Complete review

When it comes to designs, the Krown Pro series gives you a variety of high quality graphics to fit your style and personality (we've pictured the red, Rasta peace board).

Since the board measures 8โ€™โ€™ by 32 โ€˜โ€™ inches, it will offer enough stability that even a beginner can ride. The board is reasonably lightweight, only measuring 1 lb, yet still made of 7-ply Canadian maple constructions, which is sturdy enough to support heavier adults.

The skateboard packs 52 mm Krown urethane wheels. It will easily withstand bumpy roads and all while having a stylish design to compliment your style.

The downside with this skateboard is that for best performance, you may need to replace its trucks and get slightly bigger sized wheels if you are one for long-distance skating and want more comfort.

CCS Skateboard Complete review

CCS is a company that has been in the skateboard making business for over 30 years. The brand is known for its exemplary quality products at really affordable prices, and this board is just one great example of the value CCS offers for the money.

Besides the fact that it comes to you fully assembled, the CCS Pro skateboard has other features that make it opportune for the more advanced rider.

Starting with its design, the board features a twin symmetrical shape and is made using Canadian maple wood, which gives it that natural look and color. The material is known to be durable as well with a pop that makes it easier to do tricks and spins.

Prefer a colored board?

Choose from black, blue, evergreen, mint green, pink, white or yellow.  Whichever color you pick, you also get CSS logo stickers to add if, and wherever you want. The solid color of the board also makes it perfect for your own personal customizing โ€” which is why we picked this model!

Or you could choose one of CCS's boards with graphic designs.

The board is lightweight and easy to carry, with a medium concave shape that feels just right.  When it comes to deck size, the length is 32โ€ but you get to choose the width.

The board is available in 7.5, 7.75, 8, 8.25 or 8.5 inch width so pick the one thatโ€™s right for you โ€” the wider the board, the more balance, and control you get.

Also inclusive is a black grip tape to keep your feet in place, with high quality, 139 mm trucks. This is wide enough to support the equally wide deck. The trucks come integrated with rough silver which guarantees durability and strength.

When it comes to wheels, the skateboard features 52 mm 1000a Durometer wheels, which are good for rough surfaces. It has an overall ABEC-7 rating, which is fairly above average.

Playshion Drop Through Freestyle Longboard Review

Playshion 39 Inch Drop Through Freestyle Longboard Skateboard Cruiser Blue Tear

When you first take a look at the Playshion Freestyle Longboard Cruiser, itโ€™s apparent that it is not your ordinary skateboard. This is because it isnโ€™t an actual skateboard per se. It is a longboard.  Other than its unique drop-through shape, what makes a longboard different is its length.

The Playshion measures 39โ€™โ€™ which is by far longer than your ordinary skateboard. Longboards are good for cruising and moving around.

The board itself is made from 8 ply flex hardwood maple, which is really durable, to say the least. This combination of design, length, and deck material gives it an overall combination of flex and sturdiness. It also lowers the board's center of gravity such that the rider can curve turns much smoother.

The Playshion Cruiser board is built for long-distance skating. This is evident in its soft 70โ€ by 50โ€ mm wheels which ensure your ride is smooth through the bumps and harder surfaces. The wheels also allow it to pick up speed as you ride. Users claim that the wheels on this board may arguably be the best feature on it.

The longboard also features high-quality bushings, cast from polyurethane, and measuring 90A. This combination of material and quality is what makes this longboard one of the best you can find out there. Itโ€™s good for cruising, sliding and a variety of freestyle rides.

The only drawback is that due to its size, it is not efficient in doing major skateboard tricks.

If you are interested, Playshion also offers an even longer 46" bamboo freestyle longboard, as well as a best-selling 22" fiberglass mini cruiser, and a 31" beginner trick skateboard for kids and adults.

With a Playshion Freestyle Longboard you'll have hours and hours of cruising enjoyment.

Our Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Pros

  • Sturdy board can hold up to 250 lbs
  • Good quality maple wood deck
  • Large enough wheels for long-distance cruising
  • Really affordable longboard

Cons

  • While Playshion promotes this a good for beginners, itโ€™s actually better for advanced skaters how know how to balance on a board
  • Not best for performing tricks - but this is due to design, not quality
  • Length makes it susceptible to breaking with heavy duty slams

Playshion 39โ€ Drop Through Freestyle Longboard Skateboard Cruiser

Playshion also has a great line of mini-cruisers and other longboards.

Boosted Mini X Electric Skateboard Review

Boosted Mini X Electric Skateboard

The Boosted Mini X Electric Skateboard is unlike any other youโ€™d normally see out there today. It is in fact an electric skateboard.  What this means is that in addition to a fully functioning skateboard, you get the extra boost from electric propulsion.

What youโ€™ll notice first about the boosted mini X is its weight. The board is about thrice as heavy as your ordinary skateboard.

But weight is just about the only disadvantages to this boardโ€ฆ it's a necessary evil, you may call it.  The Mini X is actually shorter than Boosted's other electric longboards to make it more portable and easier to carry for commuting (and about half the price too). The smaller size is also better for city riding where you have to make tighter turns.

While there are less expensive electric skateboards like the Teamgee H5 37" Electric Longboard and the RazorX 30" Electric Skateboard, we recommend this one from Boosted because every single feature is reinforced like a tank.

And yes, we understand that this is not a cheap board by any means. But, compared to the cost of other means of transportation for commuting, it's a lot less expensive for sure! We figured for people in the market for an electric board, it's important to get one that's built to last and worth the money.

Video: Boosted Mini: Where Power Meets Agility

Boosted Mini offers the worldโ€™s best electric skateboard technology in a portable size.

From the deck to the trucks and wheels, the Boosted Mini X is built to handle high speeds and heavy weights (up to 250 pounds).

And speaking about speeds, this powerful electric skateboard is able to reach up to 20 mph and it has Boosted lunar 80mm wheels to back this up too.

At full charge, the battery should easily take you as far as 14 miles and it only takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to charge fully.

The Boosted Mini X works by using an Ergonomic and Bluetoothโ„ข enabled remote control, with 3 modes (beginner to expert) which are tuned to the specs of the board. The belt drive motor 1000 watts of power and has regenerative brakes which recharge the battery when used to gradually slow you down when you are moving too fast.

While this board does have a beginner mode (which you should use to start, even if you are an experienced skater and/or have ridden an electric board before, just to get used to the controls), we recommend brand-new skaters learn on a traditional board first.

Video: How To Ride an Electric Skateboard

Getting Started With Boosted Mini X | Courtesy of Boosted Boards

Because of its electric capabilities, the Boosted Mini X  is also able to go up hills with an incline of up to 20% (which you wouldnโ€™t expect from an ordinary skateboard).

For this, you will need to lean forward to maintain your balance. When going downhill, you can easily pull back on the throttle to slow down when things get too fast and furious.

And if you are concerned about doing tricks, well, it is still very much possible. However, You stand the risk of damaging the electrical components if you bash them too hard. While this electric skateboard is backed by 12 month warranty, it's not going to cover damage from abuse.

UPDATE: Boosted went out of business in early 2020, however Brian Schwarz purchased their inventory and these electric bikes are still available under his company, Boosted USA.

Built to last and comes with 60 day money-back warranty.

Our Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Pros

  • Electric skateboard able to reach speeds of up to 20 mph
  • Can climb uphill and brake when going downhill
  • Board is made of heavy-duty parts - can hold up to 250 lbs
  • Composite deck features a deep dish design to keep you locked in
  • Can cruise up to 14 miles on a single charge

Cons

  • Board is heavy compared to a traditional skateboard
  • The electrical parts are vulnerable to breakage if you bash them too hard
  • Expensive, but built to last and for high performance

For a more experienced skater, you may already be familiar with most of this stuff.

You probably already have an idea about the kind of board you want or are looking for an upgrade to a better board. For you, we shall dive a bit more into the intricate parts which work to help make your transition smoother and possibly get you a faster, more dynamic skateboard.

Let's look at the wonderful world of skateboards, and what you need to help you choose the board just right for you!

Types Of Boards: Which Is Best For Your Age And Experience Level?

First and foremost, a skateboard can simply not be without its most fundamental piece. This is its deck or the flat board which you stand on.

But not all boards are made equal. Their decks come in varying lengths and materials which, in turn, perform different functions and impact the types of tricks you can do.

In general, skateboard decks fall into three categories: mini skateboards, full-sized skateboards and longboards and cruisers.

Letโ€™s take a look at the pros and cons for each of them โ€” and what kind of tricks you can to with them.

Deck Types For Performing Different Tricks

Mini Skateboard

This smaller sized deck is best suited for kids and smaller children. The basic length of mini skateboards is about 22 by 6-7 inches.

These types of skateboards are made from extremely lightweight materials and are therefore easy for the child to control and learn all the beginner tricks like Ollies and flips. Itโ€™s recommended that children start off with this to gain balance and cruising skills before advancing to larger heavier boards.

Full-Size Skateboard

This size deck will be good for basically anyone over the age of 9, including teens and adults (both professional and beginner level). This is because they are heavier than mini skateboards and, therefore, more capable of handling your growing mass.

Full-sized skateboards are also made out of more durable material, which will be necessary for the more extreme tricks. They are easier to control and get a feel. A full-size skateboard will be about 31+ inches by 7.5-8 inches.

Longboards and Cruisers

These kinds of decks are usually longer than average skateboards, with lengths exceeding 32 inches. Because of this, they are better suited for transportation and cruising rather than performing tricks with them.

The main difference between the two is that longboards have a similar tip and tail. In cruisers, on the other hand, the tip and tail are clearly different. These kinds of boards are best suited for the more advanced skaters.

Length: Is Longer Always Better?

The size of the skateboard is yet another crucial factor that you must consider. Measurements on a skateboardโ€™s deck are usually done from the nose down to the tail. Typically, length tends to vary between 28 inches and 32 inches. This range of size is considered to be more stable and perfect for any new beginner skater. Anything longer than this, such as longboards, is usually better handled by more professional riders.

When looking at length, you should choose according to your particular riding needs. A shorter board, for example, would be good if you are a street rider and you love doing tricks. You can opt for a longer board, on the other hand, if you are more experienced, or working on your balance and stability.

You see, when the board is short, its profile tends to be lower. Longer boards, on the other hand, have a wider profile to them. We shall expound more on low and high profiles and their significance further below.

How the Width of a Skateboard Affects Balance

Most decks have a width of 7.5 to 8.75 inches. As a rule of thumb, the wider the board, the better-expected performance. This, however, is subject to oneโ€™s riding style and general preference.

If you are one for those crazy off rap tricks, you should consider a wider board for more control. A wider deck offers your feet more room and a higher center of gravity, which, safe to say, is good for any entry-level skater, or for practicing new skills.

That said, there still are some tricks like kickflips which are meant for street riders.

Which Deck Size Is Best For My Age?

Selecting the right deck should be your first priority.  For optimal results, you should consider the deck by comparing it with your age, shoe size, weight and experience level.

If the deck is for a young learner, of ages between 3 and 8 (perhaps the best age to start learning), with shoes ranging from sizes 3 to 6, a micro or mini skateboard would be the best option here. These skateboards are usually between 6-7 inches in width, which are perfect for smaller kids to maneuver and get accustomed to.

If you are an adolescent or teen (9-18-year-olds), youโ€™d be fine using a mid-size deck, which is around 7.3 inches in width. Since teensโ€™ physical bodies are more developed, they tend to have more control over such deck widths and can use these larger boards to perform basic tricks. These decks can be used by kids too who have already gotten used to mini skateboards.

For adults (above 18), a full deck size would do just fine. The width here is usually about 7.5 inches and above. This will suit anyone with a foot size of 9 and above, and again, any experienced teen.

What Is a Wheelbase: Does It Matter?

The wheelbase of a skateboard can simply be defined as the distance between the two inner sets of mounting holes of your skateboardโ€™s trucks.

Wheelbase determines how close or your back wheels will be from your front wheel, which, in turn, plays a part in the overall performance of your board. It also sets a tone on the way a rider feels while skating on their skateboard. On adjusting it, you will easily notice the difference.

Typically, the range is between 13-15 inches, but this can be set with regards to the riderโ€™s height and preference. If you fall on the shorter side, narrow wheelbases will be more comfortable. On the other hand, taller people would be more suited for a wider wheelbase. It will provide them with a better stance as they skate down the road.

Nose And Tail: Which Is Which?

As you may already have deduced from the naming, the nose represents the front of your skateboardโ€™s deck while the tail represents the back. If you are a beginner, it may be hard to differentiate the two, but most decks usually have graphics intended to distinguish or highlight the difference.

Another way to tell is to look for the kick. Whereby, the nose has a bigger kick to it while the tail will have a subtler, gentler kick.

What Are The Best Rails For You?

Rails are simply the edges that run along the skateโ€™s deck. They too influence the overall performance of your skateboard. The most common are rounded rails which make it easier to do flipping tricks. This can be especially ideal for pro-skaters who are constantly showing off their tricks.

The other rail types may either have sharp or blunt edges to them, which are meant to keep your shoes in place as you slide. As a new skater, you will find that falling off your skateboard is inevitable. For this, you can opt for such rails to reduce the frequency.

Currently, we also have a new kind of rail called the Gas Pedal Rails or GPS. These ones have some sections cut into a beveled edge which tends to reduce the sharpness of the rail and its concave. By so doing, they are able to provide the skater with more control and comfort.

How to Choose The Strongest Ply

Ply refers to the deck itself โ€” when it's made from wood that is. It constitutes a combination of layers of wood, which are pressed tightly to make the deck. You may wonder why not just use one solid piece of wood? This is perfectly possible; however, board decks which are made using a cross-grain pattern tend to be stronger and more durable when compared to single wood ones.

The standard today in most decks is 7 plies and would be efficient for any beginner. However, you can add a few more bucks and get a certainly more superior 9 ply-board. This kind would be stronger and more durable for the pro skater constantly doing intense tricks.

What is a Kicktail?

The kicktail is the upward curve thatโ€™s usually on the ends of your deck. If you enjoy doing stunts and tricks, then you will probably need a deck that has kicktails.

For the more experienced rider, youโ€™ll find that having a kicktail on the nose and tail of your board will give you better stability and ability to maneuver through slides, pivots, and sharp turns.

What Does EFFP Stand For?

EFFP is short for the Effective Foot Platform.

It is the top area of the deck where you control your board when standing. It is located right in the middle of your board right in between the front and rear trucks.

Camber And Rocker Boards: What Are They?

In this case, camber skateboards include all skateboards with raised middles. Rockers, on the other hand, have sunken middles.

The angle of camber and rocker is, however very subtle; you may not even notice. The difference in the shape however, still plays a role in the flex for your deck. Most decks come in neutral deck camber but you may find some longboards and cruisers with camber decks.

That said, the decks with a positive camber have a higher center of gravity and will, therefore, give you more flex. Rocker decks have a lower center of gravity with a sloped/sunken shape and are therefore more preferred by riders. Rockers are good for beginners who ideally require a lower center of gravity to maintain their balance.

The Best Skateboard Shapes for Balance & Stability

Traditionally, skateboards used to be flat; but manufacturers realized that a concave or sunken shape is more ideal.

As weโ€™ve seen with rocker skateboards, the sunken area provides a lowered center of gravity, which in turn means more balance.

As a beginner, this is a fundamental feature that you will surely need.

The shapes are also good for pros because they offer more foothold when compared to the ordinary flat board. With this, you are able to turn, slide, drift and perform tricks more easily.

The most common present day shapes for skateboards include:

  • Radial Concave Skateboard โ€” This, being the most common shape, comes in the form of a U. it helps ensure better grip in most styles of skateboarding, which is perhaps why it is used in most decks. Safe to say, any beginner level skater will find this handy.
  • Progressive Concave Skateboard โ€” This can be defined as an upgraded version of the radial concave, only that it has a steep wall on its rail, which is blended with a wider base that ultimately results in a more secure footing and that locked-in feeling. This will also be good for a new skater who needs to keep his/her feet in place.
  • W-Concave Skateboard โ€” This shape offers an extra curve in the boardโ€™s centerline. By so doing, you will be able to shift energy from your heel to your toe more easily. For a professional rider who has more control offer energy shifts; you will do well with a w-concave to get more responsiveness, precision and briskness as you skate.
  • Tub Skateboard โ€” This resembles the radial concave, however, with a sharper angle to the rails of its deck. The angle is meant to keep your feet flatter and provide assistance on sudden energy shifts. For this reason, it is good for an experienced skater as well.
  • Asymmetrical Skateboard โ€” This shape is in deck whose rails are slightly raised at different angles. It gives a rider more heel power.
  • Convex Skateboard โ€” This is the opposite of the concave shape. Contrary to concave, they have an upward-arch to their shape. Since they are not so supportive when it comes to grip, convex shaped skateboards are more suitable for professional or more advanced skaters.
  • Flat Skateboard โ€” Flat shaped boards are rarer nowadays. You can find them mostly on dropdown or cutout longboards. Although not recommendable for beginners, they provide more space for our feet, therefore, allowing you to do some tricks.

How Do I Choose The Most Reliable Truck?

If you donโ€™t already know, trucks are usually the metal components attached to the deck, used to connect the wheels with its bearings to the deck itself.

Trucks consist of two parts: the baseplate and the hanger.

The top part of it is called the baseplate. It is screwed to the deck itself. Below the baseplate is the hanger, where an axle runs through to connect the wheels.

If you buy a fully assembled skateboard (best for beginners), the truck might already be in place. However, if you are assembling it by yourself, you might have to buy and fix a truck separately. For this, you need to select wisely, depending on your intended use for the skateboard and wheel size. Most are made from aluminum alloy, so material shouldnโ€™t worry you much.

Therefore, the factor you should look at most is the truck profile.

We have different types of profiles, which, in turn, serve different needs. These include low, middle and high profiles.

  • Low Profile Skateboard Trucks โ€” Low profile trucks are mainly designed for small wheels.  Because of their lowered center of gravity, they offer more stability and more control. With a low profile, the wheels are located closer to the deck, which makes good for the more experienced skaters doing tricks such as flips and ledge grinding. For low profile, you are recommended to get 48- 55 mm wheels.
  • Middle Profile Skateboard Trucks โ€” This is a more all-rounded kind of profile, suitable for most skateboards. Because of this, it is suitable to use in both street and park skateboarding. Middle profiles are good for beginners because they offer a more flexible alternative with access to the basic tricks. The profile will do well with 53-56 mm sized wheels for maximum performance.
  • High Profile Skateboard Trucks โ€” This kind of profile is best for larger wheels. It is good for cruising streets and carving, and therefore, coexists mostly with cruisers and longboards. High profile is efficient when it comes to steering and pivoting. Because wheels are further from the deck, it allows for more mobility and reduced impact when skating on rough surfaces. With this, you get more control and choice of directions.

Best Skateboard Bearings: Which is Better Steel Bearings or Ceramic Bearings?

Bearings are the round metallic pieces used to connect your wheels to your truckโ€™s axle.

They are used primarily to reduce friction between the wheels as they spin on the axle. They come in different materials, which work differently. We shall look at some of them and their difference.

Between steel and ceramic bearings, the default option is usually steel bearings for new skaters because they are durable and cost you relatively less money.

Therefore, if you are a beginner, steel bearings should do you just fine. Since there are so many different manufacturers of steel bearings out there, it might be difficult to choose. In this case, simply pick the most expensive one if youโ€™re stuck between a choice of two โ€” in general, the more the cost, the better the quality.

That said, metal bearings sometimes malfunction because of energy created when the axle and wheels rub together. The friction created there would destroy your bearings. For this reason, it is important to keep the bearings well lubricated, clean, and dry.

Ceramic bearings, on the other hand, are considered to be more effective for reducing friction.

They tend to be smoother and more resilient than steel, meaning they will remain solid for longer amid friction. For such bearings, manufacturers tend to charge more. Due to their expensive nature, these bearings would be more suited for professional skaters seeking a competitive advantage of sorts.

In addition there are also premium titanium housings with ceramic bearings which are often the top choice for professional skaters. These high-precision bearings are made for speed and durability for sure, but definitely cost more.

For your ordinary casual skater or someone still figuring out what works best for them, a metallic bearing will still hold up just fine.

What Are ABEC Ratings and What Do They Have To Do With Anything?

If youโ€™ve owned a skateboard before, then youโ€™ve probably come across this term in your boardโ€™s wheel description. The ABEC scale was developed by the Annular Bearing Engineering Committee (hence the ABEC acronym) in order to establish industry standards for ball bearing tolerances.

In short, these ratings are a basic valuation of the quality of your wheel bearings.

A standard beginner would be well with an ABEC-5+ rating.  Let's take a further look at the different ratings (which are all odd numbers) and how they relate to skateboard bearings.

  • ABEC 1 & 3 โ€” These bearings are the ones on the lower end of the spectrum. They are low-quality and cheap, suited for those on a really, really tight budget. However, they are less efficient. They produce a lot of friction and will, therefore, not be as precise.
  • ABEC 5 & 7 โ€” This rating range is the standard bearing type for most skateboards today. Great for beginners, they will be more responsive and smooth as you use them.
  • ABEC 9+ โ€” These are the most superior bearings. Besides giving better control and speed, they are able to work better with friction and, consequently, last longer. They are more expensive, so you should ready your pockets if you are considering this kind.

There are two main factors that are considered when it comes to ABEC ratings โ€” the diameter and durometer.

Here, the diameter is how big the wheels are. It has an effect on the boardโ€™s suitability for tricks and the type of truck to use.

The durometer, on the other hand, reflects on how hard the wheels really are. Therefore determine usability on a different surface.

When it comes to diameter here are your options:

  • 48-53 mm โ€” These are the smallest sized wheels. They are also the slowest. These kinds can be good for those beginner-level learners looking to learn the art and stability.
  • 54-59 mm โ€” These are the standard sized wheels. They are good for anyone (both beginners and professionals) and will do any trick with ease.
  • 60+ mm โ€” These are most suitable for cruisers and longboards. Since they are larger, they work to reduce the impact on rough surfaces and gaps on the ground.

When looking at durometer, it gets even easier.

The usual scale ranges from 70a to 100a. Here, the higher the number in the scale, the harder the wheels.

Contrary to what most people think, the softer wheels like 70a are better suited for rougher surfaces such as pathways, streets, and rugged roads.

The harder, 100a kind wheels would do best and run faster on the smooth surfaces, including parks, ramps and pools.

โ€œSkateboarding doesnโ€™t make you a skateboarder. Not being able to stop skateboarding make you a skateboarder.โ€

- Lance Mountain, Professional Skateboarder -

All in all, picking a skateboard is made much easier when you pay attention to the most fundamental aspects of the skateboard. These are the deck, bearings, trucks, and wheels.

These are the components that affect your skateboard and its overall usability most.

When making your selection, it is important also to consider your area and nature of use, skill set, as well as the budget you have set. With our buying guide, you should now be able to know what is vitally required and what can be left behind.

Needless to say, factors such as color or design should be last on your priority. Yes, we know you want to look cool, but safety and durability come first.

Also notable is that a higher-priced skateboard or component will outperform any lower end skateboard any day. It will be better in design and overall durability. So, keep that in mind as well.
